When couples from abroad dream of an Italian wedding, they usually picture Tuscany: cypress-lined roads, golden hills, a farmhouse at sunset. It’s a beautiful image, and I understand why it’s so popular. But as an artist, I’m drawn to three other corners of northern Italy, and I’d love more couples to know about them: the Langhe, Liguria and Lake Maggiore.
Why I love painting here
For me, a wedding painting is about more than a pretty backdrop. It’s about capturing the light, the colours and the feeling of a place, so that years later you can look at the canvas and be back in that day.
These three regions give me something different each time:
The Langhe are rolling vineyard hills, soft mist in the morning and warm reds and golds in autumn. The landscape looks painted already. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site, and its villages, castles and wine cellars are full of character.
Liguria has colourful houses stacked above the sea, silvery olive groves and a light that changes by the hour. The palette is a joy to work with.
Lake Maggiore offers calm water, elegant historic villas, gardens in bloom and mountains reflected in the lake. It’s romantic without trying too hard.
Why international couples should consider them over Tuscany
A more intimate, less crowded atmosphere. Popular regions can feel busy, especially in high season. In the Langhe or on the quieter stretches of Liguria and Lake Maggiore, your wedding and your photos feel more private and personal.
Easier travel for your guests. Lake Maggiore is close to Milan Malpensa airport. The Langhe are within reach of Turin and Milan, and Liguria is served by Genoa and is not far from Nice. Guests can often arrive without long transfers.
A wider choice of settings in one trip. Within a short distance you can have vineyards, sea or lake views, historic villas and mountain scenery. Your guests can explore wine country, coastal villages and island gardens during the same stay.
Wonderful food and wine. The Langhe are home to Barolo and Barbaresco, truffles and Piedmontese cuisine. Liguria brings fresh seafood, focaccia, pesto and olive oil, and Lake Maggiore has lakeside dining. Your wedding menu can be a real regional experience.
A longer, kinder season. Tuscany can be very hot in summer. These regions offer pleasant weather from spring to early autumn, and the Langhe in October, with its harvest colours, are especially beautiful for a wedding.
A more authentic Italian experience. These are places where locals still live, work and celebrate. Your guests will feel they’ve discovered something special rather than followed the crowd.
A setting that suits a painting. A wedding painting should tell a story about where you married. Each of these regions has a distinct identity, so your artwork will be unmistakably yours.
Choosing the right place for your story
If you love wine, history and warm autumn colours, the Langhe may be your place. If you imagine the sea, pastel villages and Mediterranean light, look at Liguria. If you want elegance, gardens and the calm of the water, Lake Maggiore is hard to beat.
Whichever you choose, I’d be delighted to translate your day into a painting that holds the memory for years to come.
